IT volunteers needed to help homeless people this Christmas

Specialist volunteers are urgently needed to donate their skills to help homeless people in London over the festive season as part of Crisis at Christmas, running from Friday 23 December – Friday 30 December 2011.

Up to nine temporary centres will be set up in London by Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people, as part of Crisis at Christmas. The centres will provide vital companionship and hot meals for homeless and vulnerably housed people as well as essential services like health checks, housing advice, training and further education opportunities.

60% of UK SMEs hit by IT failures

A worrying 60 percent of respondents surveyed by City Lifeline at this year’s IP Expo have lost access to the company’s IT system following an unexpected incident. The resulting unplanned downtime lasted for more than six hours for 40 per cent of the firms surveyed, leaving employees struggling to access essential business data, run operations or communicate effectively with customers.

Women bring special skills to the IT industry, so why are there so few of them?

A recent survey of over 150 recently graduated women, working for some of the top names in the IT industry, found that women brought key and different skills to work than men and that mixed gender teams worked far more constructively than all male or male-dominated teams.

The survey was carried out by the leading IT graduate careers website TARGETjobsIT.co.uk over a three week period in October and was launched at the annual ‘IT’s not just for the boys’ event, organised by TARGETevents before an audience of female undergraduates and the sponsors Bloomberg, Nomura, Barclays, CHP Consulting and BCS on November 4th.
